The 15th Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering - SBES'2001 Promoted by SBC, Brazilian Computer Society In cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT Rio de Janeiro - Brazil IME-RJ 3-5 October, 2001 http://www.sbes.net PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS The Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (Simposio Brasileiro de Engenharia de Software - SBES, in Portuguese) is an event which integrates the academic, industrial and commercial communities. SBES is the official event of the Brazilian Computer Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Computacao - SBC) in this field and includes presentation of technical papers, invited speakers and tutorials. Previous editions of the SBES were highlighted by the presentation of high quality technical papers and the participation of important international researchers in Software Engineering. *** ACTIVITIES The symposium program includes the presentation of technical papers, invited talks, courses and demonstration of software tools. A preliminary list of satellite events (with their general chair) is shown below: - 7th Workshop of Thesis on Software Engineering (WTES) Guilherme Travassos, COPPE-UFRJ/BR - 8th Workshop on Software Quality (WQS) Kathia Marçal, COPPE-UFRJ/BR - 4rd Workshop on Formal Methods Ana Cristina Melo, IME-USP/BR - Tools Session Antonio Francisco Prado, UFSCar/BR - Tutorials/Courses Nicolas Anquetil/Renata Araujo, COPPE-UFRJ/BR - Sugarloaf PLoP (Pattern Languages of Programming) Jim Coplien, Bell Labs/USA and Rossana Andrade, UFC/BR-Univ.Ottawa/CA The Call for Papers for each satellite event will be published independently by the relevant organization committee. *** TOPICS OF INTEREST - Industrial applications of Software Engineering - Social aspects of Software Engineering - Component-based Software Engineering - Requirements Engineering - Theoretical Foundations of Software Engineering: Formal specification, refinement, software validation and verification - Methods, Techniques, Languages and Tools for Software Engineering - Software Maintenance - Software Process Modeling and Enaction - Software Engineering for the World Wide Web - Software Quality - Software Reengineering - Software Reuse - Development of CSCW tools - Software verification, validation and testing *** INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS Although submissions in Portuguese and in Spanish will be considered for evaluation, the recommended submission language is English; only papers in English will entitle to the BEST PAPER AWARD (see below). Papers submitted to SBES'2001 should not be under evaluation for publication elsewhere. Papers must be submitted electronically using the Web page at the following address (this page should be available by April, 2001): http://www.cos.ufrj.br/sbes2001 The paper itself should NOT have any identification of the authors. Authors' identification should only be provided at the submission page. The submitted papers will be evaluated based on originality, relevance, technical quality, result validation, and presentation. Theoretical papers should emphasize their contribution to the practice of Software Engineering. Papers about practical experiments should describe the method used and interpret their qualitative and quantitative results. Each submission should stress its importance and contribution to Software Engineering, presenting a comparison with related work. The selected papers will be presented during the symposium and published at the SBES proceedings. The acceptance of a paper implies that at least one of the authors will register for the conference and thus present the paper. BEST PAPER AWARD This award will be given to the best paper as selected by the steering committee. Only papers originally submitted in English will be considered by the committee for the award. PAPER FORMAT Papers must be no longer than 16 A4 pages (single column), including all the figures and references. Font: Tms Roman 12 pt (or similar) Margins: Up: 3.5 cm Down: 2 cm Left and Right: 2.5 cm All submissions must be either in ghostview-readable PostScript or Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) formats. *** LOCATION The 15th edition of the Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (SBES'2001) will be held at IME-RJ, in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Rio de Janeiro is a great touristic place (http://www.rio.rj.gov.br/riotur/index.htm). IME-RJ is located at the basis of Sugarloaf access on the coast of Vermelha beach. IME headquarters appear in (http://www.rio.rj.gov.br/riotur/rioingle/grai02.htm) as the light pink buildings. The symposium site also faces a wonderful public footpath that surrounds the Urca Hill along the sea. "The height and unmistakable outline of Sugarloaf make it - together with Christ the Redeemer one of the two main attractions offering breathtaking views of Rio. This famous landmark is reached by cablecar in two stages: first to the top of Urca Hill, where visitors catch the second car to their final destination. From the Sugarloaf, the endless beaches of Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi stretch to the horizon. Set against the lush Atlantic Rainforest, the scene is dotted with historical buildings such as the Santa Cruz Fort and the miniature palace on Fiscal Island."
